Travel Motors for Excavators: OEM-Quality Final Drive Motor Replacements for Komatsu, CAT, Hitachi & More

A travel motor, commonly referred to as a final drive motor, is the hydraulic motor assembly mounted within each track drive unit of your excavator's undercarriage, forming a core part of the machine's hydraulic parts system and serving as the direct mechanical force that propels your machine across every terrain it operates on. At Imara Engineering Supplies, we supply OEM-quality excavator travel motor assemblies cross-referenced to your exact machine model and serial number.

A machine that pulls to one side, loses traction on gradients, or suffers complete propulsion failure on one track becomes both unproductive and unsafe to operate until the fault is resolved. Imara Engineering holds high-demand travel motor assemblies in ready stock for fast dispatch across Africa and internationally, with our parts specialists available to confirm the exact correct unit for your machine by OEM part number, model, or serial number before your order is placed.

What Does a Travel Motor Do on an Excavator?

The travel motor sits at the centre of each final drive assembly, the complete unit comprising the hydraulic motor, planetary gearbox, and brake mechanism that is mounted within the track frame at the rear of each undercarriage side. When the operator commands travel using the foot pedals or travel levers, the main control valve directs high-pressure flow from the main hydraulic pump to the travel motor circuits. This pressurised fluid acts against the internal pistons of the motor, generating rotational torque on the motor output shaft.

That motor output shaft then drives through a multi-stage planetary reduction gearbox, typically two or three reduction stages, which multiplies the motor's relatively high-speed, lower-torque output into the slow-speed, extremely high-torque rotation needed to drive the track sprocket against the full weight and ground resistance of the machine. The final output is the large drive sprocket rotation you observe at the rear of the undercarriage when the machine travels. The integrated hydraulic brake valve holds the machine stationary on gradients when travel is not commanded, preventing uncontrolled movement on slopes.

Common Symptoms of Travel Motor Failure

Travel motor degradation produces recognisable symptoms that distinguish it from undercarriage, track, or hydraulic pump faults. Monitor your machine closely for these indicators:

  • Machine pulling to one side during travel — The most consistent and common symptom. One travel motor producing less torque than the other causes the machine to drift toward the weaker side during straight-line travel, requiring constant correction.
  • Loss of travel speed or inability to climb gradients — A worn motor cannot maintain sufficient output torque to drive the machine at normal speed or overcome the resistance of uphill terrain under load.
  • One track not driving — Complete failure of one travel motor results in the machine pivoting on the stationary track rather than travelling forward — the clearest indication of total motor failure.
  • Machine creeping or rolling on gradients when stationary — A faulty brake valve within the travel motor assembly fails to hold the machine in position on a slope, creating a serious safety risk.
  • Abnormal noise from the final drive — Grinding, knocking, or high-pitched whining from the track drive area during travel indicates internal motor wear, bearing failure, or gearbox damage.
  • Gearbox oil contamination or milky appearance — Water ingress or motor seal failure allowing hydraulic fluid into the gearbox oil produces a milky or discoloured oil sample on inspection.
  • Excessive heat from the final drive housing — Abnormal heat build-up at the travel motor housing during operation indicates internal friction from worn components or insufficient lubrication.
  • If your machine presents with any of these symptoms, remove the machine from operation on gradients immediately and contact Imara Engineering's parts team for diagnosis support and part confirmation.

Travel Motor Assembly: Key Components Explained

Understanding the sub-components within a travel motor assembly helps you identify the correct replacement scope when ordering:

  • Hydraulic Motor Section — The axial piston motor unit that converts hydraulic flow into rotational output. This is the highest-wear section of the assembly and the component most commonly requiring replacement in isolation, where the gearbox remains serviceable.
  • Planetary Reduction Gearbox — The multi-stage gear reduction unit that multiplies motor torque to sprocket-driving output levels. Requires replacement when gear faces show wear, bearings are noisy, or gearbox oil has been contaminated by motor seal failure.
  • Brake Valve — The hydraulic counterbalance valve that holds motor position when travel is not commanded, preventing the machine from rolling on gradients. A faulty brake valve causes creep on slopes even when the motor itself is functional.
  • Shaft Seals and O-Ring Kits — The sealing components between the motor section and gearbox that prevent hydraulic oil and gearbox oil from cross-contaminating. Seal failure is the most common entry point for progressive travel motor damage.
  • Motor Cover and Port Plate — The end cover assembly housing the motor's hydraulic inlet and outlet ports and internal valve components. Subject to wear on high-hour machines and available as individual service parts.

Complete Assembly Replacement vs Internal Motor Rebuild

When a travel motor fails, the decision between full assembly replacement and an internal rebuild depends on the nature and extent of the damage:

  • Complete Assembly Replacement is recommended when the planetary gearbox shows gear wear or bearing damage, the motor barrel or shaft is damaged beyond tolerance, the failure resulted from severe contamination or oil starvation, or the total cost of internal repair parts approaches the cost of a complete unit. Full assembly replacement delivers the fastest return to operation and eliminates uncertainty about the condition of gearbox components.
  • Internal Motor Rebuild is appropriate when — The gearbox is confirmed serviceable, the motor housing is undamaged, and failure is limited to internal seal degradation, piston slipper wear, or valve plate scoring. A quality travel motor seal and repair kit restores internal clearances and sealing integrity at a fraction of the complete assembly cost.
  • Seal Kit Only replacement is appropriate when — External leakage is detected at the motor shaft seal or port face seals, but internal motor components and gearbox are confirmed within serviceable tolerance on inspection.

Imara Engineering supplies all three supply options: complete travel motor assemblies, internal repair and rebuild kits, and dedicated seal kits, allowing you to select the most cost-effective solution for your specific situation.

Related Hydraulic Parts You May Need

Travel motor replacement frequently connects to wider undercarriage and hydraulic system servicing. Consider sourcing these components alongside your travel motor:

  • Swing Motors — Inspect the swing motor simultaneously when diagnosing hydraulic motor circuit faults across the machine
  • Hydraulic Pumps — The main pump is the upstream pressure source for travel motor circuits — inspect for wear when travel performance is reduced
  • Motor Seal Kits — Dedicated seal kits for travel motor rebuilds covering all internal and external sealing components
  • Transmission Seal Kits — For planetary gearbox seal replacement alongside travel motor servicing
  • Control Valves — Inspect travel spool condition in the main control valve when one-sided travel pull persists after motor replacement
  • Hydraulic Hoses & Pipes — Inspect and replace travel motor feed hoses when fitting a new motor assembly
