Collection: Oil Pumps

What an Oil Pump Does and Why Failure Is Catastrophic

The oil pump is the sole source of pressurised lubrication for the entire diesel engine. Driven directly from the crankshaft, it draws oil from the sump and forces it through the engine's internal oil galleries at sufficient pressure and volume to maintain a continuous lubricating film across every bearing surface in the engine simultaneously, from the crankshaft main bearings at the base of the block to the camshaft lobes and rocker arms at the top of the valve train.

The consequences of oil pump failure are among the most severe and rapid of any engine failure mode. Unlike many diesel engine failures that develop progressively over hours or days, oil pressure loss kills an engine in minutes:

  • Main bearing seizure — the crankshaft main bearings are the first to fail when oil pressure drops. Without a sustained oil film, direct metal-to-metal contact begins within seconds, and journal damage follows within minutes

  • Connecting rod bearing failure — rod bearings carry the highest instantaneous loads in the engine and fail rapidly once oil pressure is lost, often producing the characteristic knocking sound associated with a spun bearing

  • Camshaft lobe destructioncamshaft lobes depend entirely on a pressurised oil film across their contact surfaces. Oil starvation destroys lobe hardness rapidly, producing metallic debris that circulates through the remaining engine lubrication system

  • Complete engine seizure — the terminal outcome of sustained oil pressure loss. A seized engine requires complete replacement of the rotating assembly at a minimum, and frequently the entire engine block

By the time low oil pressure registers on the instrument panel in a working excavator or heavy plant machine, internal damage is often already progressing. An oil pump that is showing early wear signs, reduced pressure at idle, and slow oil pressure rise on cold start should be replaced before failure, not after it.

CAT Oil Pumps, Full Platform Coverage

Caterpillar diesel engines represent the highest demand for oil pumps across our range. The C15, 3406B, and 3406E are the most frequently replaced CAT oil pump platform engines that run under sustained high-load conditions in excavators and heavy plant, where oil pump wear accelerates as internal clearances grow at high engine hours.

Our CAT oil pumps range covers:

  • CAT C15 — the highest-demand CAT oil pump in our range, manufactured to OEM flow rate and pressure specifications for both standard and high-output C15 applications
  • CAT 3406B & 3406E — one of the most rebuilt CAT engine families in existence, with distinct oil pump specifications between the 3406B and 3406E variants that must be confirmed by engine serial number
  • CAT C7 — a widely deployed mid-range CAT platform with strong oil pump demand across excavators and medium plant equipment
  • CAT C9 — a reliable CAT platform used across a broad range of equipment types, with ongoing oil pump replacement demand
  • CAT C12 — a high-torque platform requiring exact gear mesh and pressure relief valve specification matching on oil pump replacement
  • CAT C13 — deployed across large excavators and heavy plant equipment globally, with strong parts demand across our range

All CAT oil pumps are manufactured to OEM flow rate and pressure specifications and cross-referenced to your engine serial number before dispatch.

Cummins Oil Pumps: N14, ISX & ISX15 Platforms

Cummins diesel engines are deployed across some of the most demanding heavy equipment and over-the-road applications globally. The N14 and ISX family are the highest-demand Cummins platforms in our oil pumps range engines operating under sustained high loads, where oil pump wear is a consistent high-hour failure point that experienced workshop technicians inspect proactively during any major overhaul.

Our Cummins oil pumps range covers:

  • Cummins N14 — a high-torque legacy platform with strong ongoing oil pump demand across heavy plant and on-highway applications
  • Cummins ISX & ISX15 — modern high-output Cummins platforms with oil pump specifications matched to the elevated lubrication demands of these high-pressure diesel systems
  • Other Cummins platforms — contact our team with your engine serial number to confirm availability for your specific Cummins variant

All Cummins oil pumps are manufactured to OEM flow rate and pressure specifications and verified before dispatch.

Signs Your Oil Pump Needs Replacing

Oil pump wear rarely causes sudden catastrophic failure without prior warning signs. Recognising the early indicators and acting on them before oil pressure collapses is what separates a planned oil pump replacement from an emergency engine rebuild.

Key warning signs that your oil pump requires inspection or replacement:

  • Low oil pressure warning at idle or low engine speed — a healthy oil pump maintains the minimum specified pressure even at idle. Pressure that drops below specification at idle indicates worn pump internals
  • Slow oil pressure rise on cold start — oil pressure should build within seconds of cranking. Delayed pressure rise indicates worn gear clearances, allowing oil to bypass rather than pressurise
  • Oil pressure that drops significantly under load — pressure that is adequate at idle but falls away under load suggests the pump is no longer able to maintain flow volume against system demand
  • Unusual engine noise on start-up that clears as pressure builds — brief valve train or bearing noise on cold start that disappears once oil pressure establishes is a classic early indicator of borderline oil pump output
  • Metallic debris in the oil filter — if bearing or camshaft debris is present in the oil filter, oil pump inspection should accompany the investigation into the debris source

If any of these symptoms are present, continued operation without investigation risks converting an oil pump replacement into a full rotating assembly rebuild.

What to Replace at the Same Time as Your Oil Pump

Oil pump replacement is most effective when carried out alongside inspection and replacement of the components most directly affected by oil pressure delivery. Fitting a new pump into a system with other wear factors negates much of the protection the new pump is intended to provide.

At Imara Engineering, we recommend sourcing the following alongside your oil pump:

  • Oil pump pickup tube and strainer — the pickup tube strainer is the oil pump's primary defence against debris ingestion. A blocked or damaged strainer restricts oil supply to the pump and accelerates re-wear. Always replace or clean thoroughly at the same time
  • Main and rod bearing shells — if the existing bearings have been subjected to any period of low oil pressure, their surfaces should be inspected and replaced before the new pump is installed.
  • Engine gasket and rebuild kit — if the oil pump replacement is being carried out as part of a broader engine overhaul, a complete rebuild kit covers all the seals required for correct reassembly. Check our Gasket Kits and Rebuild Kits range for full CAT and Cummins platform coverage
  • Water pump — on engines where the oil and water pumps are both high-hour components, replacing both in the same overhaul eliminates the risk of a water pump failure causing an overheating event that damages the freshly rebuilt lubrication-dependent components. Check our Water Pumps range for full platform coverage

Our team can consolidate all associated components into a single order to eliminate sourcing gaps and reduce the risk of a missing component halting your rebuild.

Why Source Your Oil Pump from Imara Engineering?

Workshop managers and fleet operators across Australia, North America, Canada, and globally choose Imara Engineering for oil pumps because the lubrication system is the one area of a diesel engine rebuild where a specification compromise has immediate and severe consequences — and we do not compromise on specification.

  • OEM Flow Rate and Pressure Specifications — Pump geometry, gear mesh tolerances, and pressure relief valve settings are all manufactured to OEM specifications. Correct output is what protects every bearing surface in your engine from the first moment of operation.
  • Confirmed Fitment Before Dispatch — Engine serial number cross-referenced before every order ships. 3406B or 3406E, C15 standard or high-output, the correct pump specification confirmed before dispatch, not assumed.
  • Associated Components Available — Pickup tubes, strainers, gasket kits, water pumps, and bearing shells available alongside your oil pump in a single consolidated order.
  • Fast Worldwide Shipping — Dispatching to Australia, USA, Canada, and internationally with full tracking and fast turnaround on all in-stock items.
