What Does a Swing Motor Do on an Excavator?

The swing motor is mounted on the upper structure of the excavator, directly above the slew ring bearing that connects the upper house to the undercarriage. The motor drives a pinion gear on its output shaft that meshes with the internal ring gear of the slew ring, producing the continuous 360-degree rotational capability that is fundamental to excavator operation. When the operator commands a swing left or swing right input, the main control valve directs high-pressure flow from the main hydraulic pump to the appropriate port of the swing motor, generating torque in the commanded rotational direction.
